"The device – dubbed MEDUSA (Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio) – exploits the microwave audio effect, in which short microwave pulses rapidly heat tissue, causing a shockwave inside the skull that can be detected by the ears. A series of pulses can be transmitted to produce recognisable sounds.  ... Previous microwave audio tests involved very 'quiet' sounds that were hard to hear ..."  [Microwave ray gun controls crowds with noise, 3 July 2008]

Now that the cat is out of the bag at last, may we please now commence the public, ethical debate denied to us almost six years ago, when we first sought to raise ethical objections to the sub-class of acoustic weapons that the US military had been calling "V2K" weapons (Voice-TO-sKull)?  We called for this debate before it was as widely known as it has since become known, that such weapons were feasible, under development and allegedly already being deployed -  and not merely for "crowd control", but also against arbitrary civilians for individually targeted behavioural influence applications, potentially subliminally.
